The baroque Benedictine Abbey of Melk towers impressively above the town at the entrance to the Danube in the Wachau region. Melk has been a spiritual and cultural center of the country for more than 1,000 years. The monastery has become literarily known, among other things, through Umberto Eco's novel "The Name of the Rose". The imposing baroque building is a visible expression of the importance of the monastery in the baroque period. A guided tour through the monastery will impressively convey the former importance of the monastery. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to explore the grounds yourself before the bus picks you up again and takes you back to the ship.

In Vienna, cozyness is still capitalized, so it is not said for nothing: Who comes to Vienna, must plan time. Experience it yourself during a typical Heurigen evening in Vienna. By bus you will go to a famous Heurigen place, where you will spend the evening in a cozy atmosphere in a typical Heurigen. "Heurigen" refers to both the rustic taverns and the young wine. The Heurigen musicians will provide the right atmosphere. The price of the excursion also includes a drink.

Today's destination is Esztergom, the former Gran was once the capital of Hungary. According to legend, the first Hungarian king and founder of the state Stephen I saw the light of day here. Once the first royal residence and today the seat of the head of the Catholic Church, the Bishop of Esztergom, the city has a great importance in the Hungarian consciousness. The cityscape is dominated by the neo-classical cathedral high above the city, which was dedicated to St. Stephen and, with 8,000 seats, is the largest church in Hungary. A small train takes you from the landing stage directly up to the impressive basilica. During the walk around the basilica you will enjoy a panoramic view of the Danube and the opposite Slovak Sturovo, before it goes by the little train through the city back to the ship.

Budapest by night with folklore

Experience the impressive performance of a Hungarian folklore group with their spirited music and colorful traditional costumes at this evening event typical of the country. You will be served a typical Hungarian goulash soup and Hungarian wine. Afterwards you will drive back to the ship through the nocturnal Budapest, past the brightly lit magnificent buildings, such as the Parliament, Fishermen's Bastion, Matthias Church, Buda Castle, the Chain Bridge and the Gellert Hill.

Budapest is certainly one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and bears the nickname "Queen of the Danube" not without reason. The Danube divides the Hungarian metropolis into the districts of Buda and Pest. You will first drive through the city center and enjoy the flair of the city. Enjoy a beautiful view of the Buda Castle, Fishermen's Bastion and Matthias Church, which still remind of the glory of past times. Also a small visit to the famous Budapest market hall may not be missing, of course.

Puszta excursion from/to Budapest

The drive to Lajosmizse takes you south of Budapest towards the Hungarian lowlands, the Puszta. Upon arrival at Tanya-Cszárda, you will be welcomed in the typical way of the country with schnapps and salty pastries. You will visit the stud farm and then you can take part in a short carriage ride across the vast plain of the Puszta. Afterwards the Csikos (Hungarian horse herders) invite you to a special kind of horse show. You will learn about the Hungarian horse traditions and get to know the habits of the former Csikos, because in former times the horse was the best friend of the man in the Puszta. After the presentation you will have the opportunity for a short walk through the stables of the Cszárda. Here you will also be served a small snack of Hungarian specialties and wine. In the boutique you will have the opportunity to buy Hungarian souvenirs, salami, paprika products, wine and brandy.

Bratislava is located in the fertile Danube plain south of the Small Carpathians in the immediate vicinity of the borders with Austria and Hungary. The Slovakian capital could be aptly described as "small but nice". The old town has been magnificently renovated with great attention to detail. During your sightseeing tour of Bratislava, you will first drive through the embassy district to the castle (Hrad), which towers high above the city and is considered the city's landmark. There you will make a photo stop and enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the city. Here you will also get more detailed information about the eventful history of the castle, which was the residence of numerous Hungarian kings for a long time before Maria Theresa settled there and the castle experienced its heyday. Afterwards, you will continue to the Old Town and begin the walking tour. Walking together through the Old Town of Bratislava, you will see the Redoubt, the National Theater, the City Hall and some Baroque palaces and the city gates that testify to the k.u.k. Monarchy. Among other things, you will also meet the most famous man of Bratislava, Gullimann Cumil.
